-evaluation-

Edradour 12 Year Old Barbaresco Cask Small Batch (Edradour 2011/2023 Matured in Barbaresco Casks, 48.2%) is a limited edition whisky produced by Edradour, one of Scotland's smallest distilleries. It is an experimental and high-quality whisky that has been aged entirely in casks from Barbaresco, a premium red wine from Piedmont, Italy.

Nose: Complex and distinctive, with notes of prunes, sultanas, dried apricots, blackcurrant jam, orange peel, red wine tannins, and spices. Earthy notes of truffle, black tea, and cocoa powder also emerge.
The aromas of ripe berries and damp earth combine with the rich esters characteristic of Edradour, creating a very "wild" and seductive impression.

Palate: The initial palate is sweet and juicy, reminiscent of rum-soaked fruit cake, with layers of honey, chocolate and spices (cloves, nutmeg and cardamom).
Gradually, dry tannins from the wine barrels emerge, and the whole is tightened by a deep bitterness reminiscent of blackberry, plum, dried fig, a hint of cocoa and tobacco.
Adding water brings out the oak and rubbery elements slightly, but it's not too heavy and the finish is smooth and balanced.

Finish: Medium to long. Dry, but with notes of toffee, dark chocolate, and leather, with fruit from the red wine barrels and a pleasant astringency remaining until the end.

The reviews praised it as "neither too sweet nor too bitter, with a very pleasant balance of fruit, cream, and honey," and described it as "a one-of-a-kind whiskey, with Edradour's signature funkiness exquisitely blended with the unique character of the wine casks."

Overall Review: Edradour 12 Year Old Barbares Cask stands out as an experimental release, fully aged in fine Italian red wine barrels. Its complex flavor, combining fruity notes with earthy and dry notes, has earned it acclaim from many enthusiasts as a "successful example of wine cask aging."
